The field of microfluidics requires the design of systems for which small volumes of fluids will be handled, such as microfluidic devices that have dimensions starting at millimeters in size and smaller. The science of designing, manufacturing, and formulating microfluidic devices and processes requires handling volumes of fluid on the order of a Nano liter, which is a billionth of a liter, or a Pico liter, which is a trillionth of a liter.
A microfluidic chip is a set of micro-channels etched or molded into a material such as silicon, glass, or polymer that are connected together for a specific function such as mixing, sorting, or pumping. Through the chip, inputs and outputs are pierced together, creating a network of micro-channels that can interface between themselves and the macro- and micro-worlds. Liquids or gases are then injected into these holes and removed from the microfluidic chip through tubing or syringe adapters with external systems such as a pressure controller, a push-syringe, a peristaltic pump, or through more passive ways such as hydrostatic pressure. Micro-channels can have the same characteristic size as biological cells which can play an important role in areas such as drug screening and cell biology research.
